• HOW TO SHOP ON A BUDGET

Ahh… the eternal shopaholic question. How do I shop on a budget, yet still get what I want? At least, that’s my main question every time I walk into a mall. With back-to-school time right around the corner, I’m convinced I need every new pair of shoes imaginable, plus a new bag, dress, etc. Sadly, the reality is that every once in awhile, I have to set a budget for myself and stick to it. But there’s no reason that that should be a deciding factor as to whether or not you get the good stuff! There’s no need to go all “Extreme Couponing” here (although, props are definitely deserved for those that do). Here are some tips to keep your inner fashionista and your wallet happy.

    1. Shop the sales: In the retail world, women who shop only sales are called “bottom feeders”. They’re the ones who are getting designer pieces at 90% off. That $400 purse? Yes, they got it for $50. When I say that you have to shop the sales, I mean you have to really SHOP them. Do you research and know when they are and what product is going to be available. Plan you big shopping sprees around them. Stock up. It will truly make a difference in the long run.
    2. Take advantage of the “off-price” stores: Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Nordstrom Rack, Saks Off Fifth Ave, and the likes are called “off-price” stores. You get the same high quality product as you would at bigger department stores, just at a smaller price tag. Sometimes these stores can feel overwhelming, so definitely go in there with a mission.
    3. Question every purchase: It sounds silly and I hate myself for even saying it. But…it makes a big difference. We love to shop. However, that leads to buying items just for the sake of buying them. Yes, every once in awhile that is TOTALLY needed. But there has to be a limit. Really ask yourself if you need that new pair of shoes or the $40 water bottle…. If the answer is yes, then get it. If not, put it down and back away slowly…
    4. Set a budget: This probably should be #1 on this list, but it’s a good one to end with. Based on your finances, set aside a certain amount each month that you can spend. Keep track of it too, whether it’s by saving receipts, or with an app on your phone. I personally really like the app “Mint”. It allows your to set budgets and it tracks your trend in spending.
